Face behind the brand: The Foggy Dog Collection

Posted by Sarah Jackson on 8th Jan 2019

Meet Rose, founder of the beautiful California brand The Foggy Dog.

When did you first start the Foggy Dog Collection?

I started The Foggy Dog in 2013 when I was still working full-time at a different company. My first product was a dog bed cover. I had the idea to create a beautiful "duvet cover" from premium upholstery fabric to instantly refresh an old, beaten up dog bed. When I listed the first dog bed covers on Etsy, they immediately started selling out and that's when I knew that other people wanted attractive dog products too!

Why did you choose to start it?

At the time it was a fun side project and creative outlet. The Foggy Dog lets me combine two passions: design and dogs. Dogs bring such joy to peoples' lives, and I believe good design does as well. While industries like home decor and apparel have undergone a design renaissance in recent years, for the most part the pet industry has not. I saw a gap in the marketplace for attractive, modern pet products that were also extremely high quality and made in America.

What inspires the designs of your products?

Coming up with new products is one of my favourite things to do. Probably the best source of new ideas is my customers. For instance, after multiple customers asked for more attractive pet waste bag dispensers, I developed our new, beautiful leash bags which are now one of my favourite products.

What were you doing before Foggy Dog?

I started The Foggy Dog while working as VP of Merchandising at Minted, where I helped to uncover and produce exceptional designs from independent artists. In 2016, I left Minted to focus full-time on The Foggy Dog with the goal of bringing that same level of design quality to the pet industry.

Do you have a dog?

Ironically, my husband and I are actually in between dogs right now. We were about to get a goldendoodle puppy when we found out that we were pregnant with twins! Given how much we wanted a dog, we almost still went ahead with it but our friends staged an intervention. Now that our daughters are a bit older, we are ALMOST ready. Until then, I have to live vicariously through all my customers' dogs.

What does the future hold for the Foggy Dog collection, you currently offer dog toys, beds and walking accessories, could we expect maybe a dog clothes range coming soon?

Collars! That is the number one requested item from our customers :) I'm also thinking about launching more dog toys (possibly wool felt toys, it's such a wonderful and natural material) as well as more attractive blankets for dogs - and yes, possibly clothing!
